Qualifications for Inclusion

The Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné project considers “artworks” to be those works conceived of and created by Isamu Noguchi during the artist’s lifetime as part of his artistic practice.

Artworks included in the present scope of research and currently published or scheduled for publication in the digital Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné comprise the following categories:

  • Discrete three-dimensional objects, both sculptural and utilitarian
  • Environments composed of multi-element arrangements
  • Individual objects, cast, manufactured, or otherwise fabricated, as part of an edition or production size totaling 12 or fewer in quantity
  • Design concepts for objects, cast, manufactured, or otherwise fabricated as part of an edition or production size totaling 13 or more in quantity
  • Preparatory models indicated as a formal artwork by the artist (e.g. through exhibition, casting, sale, etc.)
  • Works on paper indicated as a formal artwork by the artist
  • Reproductions of original artworks, made by or authorized by the artist during his lifetime
  • Artworks partially reconstructed by the artist during his lifetime, with information on the original and altered states
  • Artworks designed by the artist, and fabricated by others in accordance with the artist’s instructions or designs
  • Artworks believed lost or destroyed, when there is adequate documentation of the artwork's original state
Categories of Noguchi’s production that are not currently scheduled for publication in the digital Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné comprise the following categories:
  • Works unfinished at the time of the artist’s death
  • Posthumous works (works begun and/or completed after artist’s death)
  • Juvenilia (works made by the artist prior to 1924)
  • Works and elements discarded by the artist
  • Working or preparatory studies for formal artworks which were not intended for presentation as a discrete artwork or otherwise identified as a formal artwork by the artist
  • Photographs taken by the artist and other ephemera related to the artist
  • Works executed by the artist to the specifications of another person's instructions or designs, where the artist had no influence on the original concept or design
  • Individual objects fabricated or manufactured in quantities greater than 12 (these are instead represented by a single “concept” entry—see above)
Other objects not included in the present scope of research, and not considered for publication in the digital Isamu Noguchi Catalogue Raisonné, include, but are not limited to the following categories:
  • Works of questionable attribution or authenticity
  • Reproductions of original artworks not made by, or authorized by the artist
  • Molds made for cast objects and other byproducts of an artwork’s intended production
